Philipp Thesen

A designer and a strategist — Philipp Thesen is among the most prominent pioneers in the field of strategic design for digital transformation. He advises organizations how to strategically leverage the full potential of design, to differentiate by meaningful customer experiences, to innovate and to transform their business.

Since 2018 Philipp is a professor for design with a focus on Human-System-Interactions at the Darmstadt University. In his academic role he is researching at the intersection of design and AI and teaching digital product, service and system design.

Philipp has two decades of experience as creative director, design strategist and leader of international design teams. As Senior Vice President Design at Europe’s largest Telco Deutsche Telekom he was responsible for the design strategy, the design of all products and digital user experiences, as well as the worldwide implementation of customer experience principles in more than 20 countries.

During those years, he was deeply committed in shifting Deutsche Telekom from being infrastructure-led to being design-led, placing empathy and humanity at its core. His focus on driving the role of design as a strategic asset for the business won him and his team more than 200 international design awards and recognitions. 

As a thought leader, author and keynote speaker Philipp is engaged in the developing design as leadership discipline for digital transformation and humanizing technologies. Philipp is a member of the Art Directors Club, German Design Council and advisory board member of the Design Management Institute Boston as well as a jury member in numerous international design competitions.
